Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2018 of 490 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics and the research focus
The research at the division of Neurogeriatrics is focused on neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s disease and aims to translate findings from basic research into clinical practice. The position will be affiliated to Bengt Winblad group that works with early phase drug discovery for AD and other related disease. We have access to world class infrastructure in the form of several high-end core facilities situated at Karolinska Institutet. Pavel Pavlov will be the major responsible person for the project.

Research group
Our research group is located at the Karolinska Institutet, Center for Alzheimer’s research, Department of NVS. Our work is mainly focused on targeting of protein-protein interactions (PPI) to develop novel therapeutics against several human disorders. We are using combination of structural biology, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, in vitro and in vivo assays for proof-of-concept experiments to study the role of these PPIs at the cellular level. We aim to develop small molecule inhibitors of PPI as drug candidates for several human diseases. We now want to expand the group with a 1 year postdoctoral position with possibility of extension for another year.

We are seeking an independent researcher with experience in a range of molecular biology techniques, including gene cloning and mutagenesis, quantitative real-time PCR, protein chemistry techniques including Western blot and ELISA immunoassays, protein production and purification. Candidate should also design and perform pharmacological studies in the rodents including analysis of animal behavior, blood sampling, tissue sectioning and immunological staining to evaluate the efficacy of novel drug candidates. The candidate must be self-competent and well organized to be able to work and collaborate well with others.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
The applicant should have a doctoral degree in medicine, cell biology, biomedicine, biochemistry or similar topic. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue research, be organized and structured and have an ambitious and innovative attitude. The project is cross-disciplinary and pursued in collaboration with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are necessary. Emphasis will be put on personal skills in the evaluation process. Very good ability to speak and write English is a requirement.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
