A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
A doctoral position is available in the Bienko Laboratory for Quantitative Biology of the Nucleus (https://bienkocrosettolabs.org). The main research project associated with this position is to study how the genome of various eukaryotic species is organized along the cell nucleus radius (genome radiality), and to assess how chromosomal rearrangements influence genome radiality.
Division/Research group
The Bienko Laboratory is located at SciLifeLab Stockholm (www.scilifelab.se), an interdisciplinary center for life sciences featuring state-of-the-art facilities and a broad range of groups working at the interface between biology, medicine, and computational sciences.
My main scientific interest in the Bienko group is in understanding how eukaryotic genomes are spatially organized, and how genome architecture regulates and/or is regulated by gene expression. In the long term, we aim at advancing human health, by dissecting the role that genome architecture and function play in physiological as well as disease conditions.
The Bienko lab offers a highly dynamic and interdisciplinary environment where senior scientists, postdocs and students from multiple disciplines—ranging from biology, engineering, physics, and computer science—work closely together on a daily basis. The team currently features four postdocs (molecular biology, bioinformatics, microscopy, image analysis), four PhD students, one lab manager, and one lab administrator.
The successful candidate will be immersed in a thriving scientific atmosphere and have the opportunity to join the active SciLifeLab PhD community and interact with peers from three different universities (KI, KTH, SU).
The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
In this project, the doctoral student will pursue three major tasks:
1. Expanding the versatility and resolution of the GPSeq method, which we have recently developed in my lab to measure radiality genome-wide
Eligibility requirements for doctoral education
In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.
It is your responsibility to certify eligibility by following the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
Follow the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.
*If you claim equivalent knowledge, follow the instructions on the web page Assessing equivalent knowledge for general eligibility for doctoral education.
You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
Follow the instructions on the web page English language requirements for doctoral education.
Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.
Specific entry requirement
We will prioritize candidates with documented hands-on experience in DNA and/or RNA FISH techniques and next-generation sequencing techniques. We require all the candidates to have well-documented prior experience in basic molecular biology and mammalian cell culture techniques, with at least six months spent at an internationally renowned laboratory doing wet-lab research. Additionally, we require a strong affinity for developing and optimizing new protocols and for troubleshooting.
Since we continuously strive to maintain a gender-balanced group and since women are currently under-represented in our group, we are particularly interested in applications from female candidates.
A Master Degree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biomedicine or equivalent is required. Proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school. Proficiency in the English language can be documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS, see web-link below for more information. Applicants who meet the general entry requirements (1 or 2 above) from a university in one of the Nordic countries fulfill the requirements in English. Skills and personal qualities
We are seeking for enthusiastic candidates who are truly passionate and curious about Nature, and have a keen fascination for how the genome is arranged and functions in the cell nucleus. We require candidates to have a strong motivation to work in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, and willingness to interact with scientists with computational background is mandatory. We strongly encourage candidates with a strong motivation to develop both experimental and bioinformatics skills to apply.
Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:
- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject
The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
