Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
The vascular surgery group is a section within MMK. Many of the affiliated researchers are clinically active. The vascular group is led by professor Ulf Hedin, and consists of several teams, the carotid group “BiKE” (Hedin/Perisic), the Stockholm Aneurysm Research group (STAR, Roy/Hultgren) and the thrombosis/trauma group (Wahlgren). STAR is a growing group at MMK, an informal network holding epidemiological research projects as well as translational, radiological and clinical. The group incorporates 20-25 persons, including researchers, postdocs and PhD-students. Our research focus on diagnostics, treatment and interventions for patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA).
STAR has a strong collaboration between clinical departments, the laboratory at Bioclinicum, KTH, national and international research groups. For more information on our research group see our homepage. https://ki.se/en/mmk/star-research-area

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
This doctoral student project aims at studying possible sex differences in AAA patients, focusing on untreated patients. This will be performed within two epidemiological projects based on very large registry based cohort. The student will also participate in the building of a prospective biobank for AAA patients at the Vascular Department, which is a project aiming at exploring improved control programs for AAA patients.
The PhD-student and the supervisors will for each individual study included in the doctoral project sharpen the preliminary project plan, and re-evaluate the projects. The PhD-student will, under supervision, create the individual study cohorts, as well as carrying out all statistical analyses, and writing the manuscripts.  The student will participate in international and national surgical meetings to present relevant data, and participate in education of junior medical students, interns and peers within the field.
