Karolinska Institutet, Department of Public Health Sciences

Department
At the Department of Public Health Sciences we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology. The research is aimed at analysing health determinants on the population level, and developing and evaluating preventative structural and individualised measures, including legislation and guidelines. The field also includes health economics, health systems research and implementation research. Our activities have a strongly international flavour, and the Department's researchers are scientific advisers to authorities and other decision-makers on the regional, national and international level. The Department is divided into research groups operating within the fields of global health, public health epidemiology and social medicine with a total of 150 employees. In addition, we have around 80 PhD students.

This position is located in the EPiCSS (Epidemiology of Psychiatric Conditions, Substance use and Social Environment) research group. The group consists of approximately 30 researchers. Our ultimate aim is to develop early intervention and prevention of mental ill health, including substance use, by understanding risk/protective factors in the context of the social environment.

This position is time-limited for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension.

Duties
We are looking for a postdoc with experience in epidemiological research who will conduct research on questions regarding the influence of maternal nutrition and metabolism during pregnancy on risk for neurodevelopmental disorders (such as autism, intellectual disability, and ADHD). The postdoc will work with a large linkage of Swedish health register data, examining the relationships between longitudinal measures of maternal health during pregnancy and children’s risk of different neurodevelopmental disorders. For a nested case-cohort sample, biological samples from early life are available and will be analyzed for biomarkers (including biomarkers of immune function, nutrition, and metabolic processes and potentially including genotyping); the postdoc will have the opportunity to analyze the relationship between maternal nutrition, molecular biomarkers and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. The postdoc will be involved in all aspects of the research, including formulating study designs, statistical analyses of the data, interpreting results of those analyses, and communicating results (through written manuscripts and oral presentations).

Entry requirements
To be qualified to be employed as a postdoctor, the candidate must have obtained a PhD or have equivalent scientific competence.

Mandatory requirements:

  • A strong, documented background in statistical analysis of complex datasets.

  • Excellent English language communication abilities, in terms of both speaking and writing.

Desired requirements:

  • Documented experience with handling longitudinal and clustered data.
  • Experience in the statistical analysis of datasets including biological measurements (such as genetic or proteomic data).
  • Prior experience working with large epidemiological cohort studies.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate scientific results (though peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and/or popular science communication).
  • Show an ability to work within highly collaborative environments.
