The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). Division
Karolinska Institutet Biobank (KI Biobank) is a core-facility at Karolinska Institutet situated at the department of medical epidemiology and biostatistics (MEB). Its purpose is to provide services and infrastructure for biobanking of samples and data that are part of ethically approved research studies with the goal of improving public health. Our vision is to offer cost efficient services with high quality and security that can meet researchers need of fast and flexible research infrastructure. After fourteen years of steady growth the biobank holds samples and related data from half a million Swedish residents.

Are you interested in contributing to world leading medical science? We need to ensure that our IT systems are sustainable, highly effective and can be further developed to meet evolving needs and opportunities. IT department at KI biobank is composed of six software developers that work together with systems supporting sample- and data collection to scientists not only at Karolinska Institutet but also around Sweden.

Duties
The purpose of your role as software developer at KI biobank is to work with development and maintenance of the IT systems that support the operations of the KI biobank. This includes laboratory information management system (LIMS), laboratory robots, the databases, data visualization as well as other applications. KI biobank IT also works with patient data and data flows as well as integration and visualization of these.

You will be part of an exciting working place with close connection to medical research regarding widespread diseases as well as prospective studies. This includes working with development of tools that researchers need in order to be able to see their data regarding both sample and patients in an easy and flexible way. Furthermore, part of the tasks included will be development and maintenance of IT systems that support all the functions at KI biobank, customer interaction as well as laboratory automation.

Requirements

  • University degree in computer science, computer engineering or equivalent discipline
  • Programming skills in Java
  • Experience of version control
  • You are flexible, structured and have good collaboration skills
  • Good knowledge in both written and oral English
  • Emphasis will be on the applicant’s ability to learn new skills

Desirable skills

  • Experience in using either Oracle and/or SQL server
  • Experience in Maven
  • Experience in Ansible
  • Experience in Laboratory automation
  • Good knowledge in both written and oral Swedish
