Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Medicine/Center for Infectious Medicine(CIM)

Unit
The Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM; http://www.ki.se/cim) is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational studies of the human immune system and infection-immunity in humans. CIM is located within the Karolinska Institutet’s newly established research facilities, ANA Futura.

Research groups
The candidate will work in the research groups headed by Professor Anna Norrby and Ass. Prof. Mattias Svensson, resp. Both are active at the Center for Infectious Medicine, ANA Futura. The groups focus on host-pathogen interactions in acute bacterial infections (Norrby-Teglund; http://ki.se/en/medh/anna-norrby-teglund-group) and tissue inflammation (Svensson; http://ki.se/en/medh/mattias-svensson-group).

Responsibilities
We are seeking both an experienced microbiologist as well as a cell (tissue) biologist for studies of host-pathogen interactions in severe invasive bacterial infections. The successful candidates will be involved in recently granted transnational projects focusing on personalized medicine in severe acute infections, such as sepsis and severe deep tissue infection. The research seeks to generate new knowledge of underlying mechanisms of value for patient stratification and tailored therapy. Studies will include analyses of human cell and tissue model systems as well as patient materials and omics data. A particular focus is on streptococcal and staphylococcal infections.

We seek candidates that can independently design, conduct and complete high quality research projects.

The applicant should have a PhD in a relevant field, i.e. microbiology, infection biology, cell biology and/or immunology. The applicant must have proven experience of successful high quality research, as evident by publications in respected international journals. Experience in the area of host-pathogen interactions, cell and/or tissue cultures, inflammation, experience with confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular biology (protein and RNA/DNA work) and omics analyses is of merit.

The applicants should be collegial, appreciate team work, possess excellent experimental skills and be enthusiastic and dedicated researchers. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
