The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) consists of 23 divisions and is active in many areas of clinical and molecular medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and diagnostic research. The department is performing undergraduate and postgraduate education at Karolinska Institutet, currently with around 150 PhD students enrolled.

Division

The position is located at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Department of Clinical physiology at Karolinska Institutet in Solna. The employment will be combined with specialist medical services at Clinical physiology, Karolinska University Hospital.

An overall goal for Clinical physiology is to offer high level of competence and expertise by conducting research and education at an internationally outstanding level, and by interacting with national and international research groups.

Duties

The employment is focused on research. We are looking for a person who can develop clinical and basic research in the field, at an internationally leading level, as well as maintain and develop active research collaborations at national and international level. The holder of the employment will conduct his or her own high-quality research in key areas of Clinical physiology. The holder will also actively contribute through teaching and supervision in undergraduate and postgraduate education in the field, and through collaborations contribute to the building of a broad competence in the entire area of Clinical physiology at Karolinska Institutet.

Applicants shall hold a high and internationally recognized research competence in the area of Clinical physiology. This includes to apply and develop methods in Clinical physiology for the characterization and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research- and teaching expertise, as well as management-, development- and collaborative skills and clinical expertise. Great emphasis is placed on the personal qualities required to further strengthen the subject of Clinical physiology at Karolinska Institutet. The applicant must have well-documented educational experience, as well as experience in leading both research and education.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician at a healthcare facility for medical training and research and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in clinical physiology or other nearby area, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Bases of assessment
The Professorship is focused on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership-, development- and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

Particular merit is given to excellence in clinical physiological research, especially in cardiovascular imaging techniques. The ongoing research of the department focuses on the development and application of imaging techniques for the cardiovascular system for various diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke, valvulopathy, heart failure, diabetes etc, where a careful survey is important for pathophysiological understanding, therapy and prevention of disease progression. Research experience in this field is highly credible.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
