The Department of Clinical Neuroscience

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education is conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as the Stockholm County Council. Division

One of the five divisions of the department is the Center for Psychiatry Research. Activities at the interdisciplinary and multi-professional division comprise research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, post graduate training, organizing and participating in continuous professional education, and networking regarding research in all fields of mental disorder.

Examples of research areas at the Center are studies associated with different diagnostic categories (e.g. psychosis, substance use disorder, OCD), epidemiological research on all aspects of mental ill health including neurodevelopmental aspects, and clinical intervention studies in collaboration with Stockholm County Council. Duties

The employment has focus on research. The successful applicant will conduct research and education, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. We are looking for an experienced and highly qualified researcher in the field of psychiatry, who demonstrates scientific and pedagogical skills as well as overall strong competence in the field. The appointee of the professorship is expected to assume responsibility for coordinating and developing the undergraduate teaching of medical students, as well as supervising postgraduate training of PhD-students. The successful applicant is expected to lead and develop groundbreaking research within the subject area, to help build and develop the competencies needed to considerably enhance KI's visibility in the field, nationally and internationally. The successful applicant is expected to attract and obtain external funding in national and international competition. 

The tasks also include developing and establishing multidisciplinary research networks both nationally and internationally in the field. The applicant should also promote the development of psychiatric research at KI through teaching, doctoral education and through collaboration with stakeholders.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research- and teaching expertise, as well as management-, development- and collaborative skills and clinical expertise.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in psychiatry at a healthcare facility for medical training and research and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in psychiatry, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

The new professor must meet the eligibility requirements in accordance with KI's employment procedure. The applicant shall demonstrate the ability to conduct multidisciplinary research in the field of mental disorders. The applicant must have good ability to collaborate with other researchers and clinicians as well as a very good knowledge of speaking and writing in one of the Scandinavian languages and English.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership-, development- and collaboration expertise (1) and clinical expertise (2).

Having led research projects focused on clinical and/or translational research related to mental disorders/psychiatry is meriting. To have received significant research funding in competition in the field of research on mental disorders/psychiatry is another meriting factor. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to have well-established national and international cooperation in the field. Training in and/or experience of academic leadership is an advantage.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
