The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division

The division of occupational therapy, located in KI Campus-Flemingsberg, has a faculty of approximately 40 teacher/researcher/affiliated staff as well as clinical and administrative staff. The division has approximately 20 doctoral students and a broad international network within both research and education. The division strives to conduct high level research within occupational therapy, occupational science, and in a broader perspective health science research.  Furthermore, the division commits to delivering education with excellence on all levels (occupational therapy entry-level bachelor), (occupational therapy masters), as well as methods or concepts courses on the doctoral level. The division also provides contracted courses targeting professionals or others.

Duties

The employment has a focus on education and research. We are looking for a senior-level academic who has demonstrated a strong track record in occupational therapy and occupational science and pedagogic scholarship, and who can contribute to and engage in further developing occupational therapy and occupational science and education at Karolinska Institutet. As professor, the role includes representing, developing, and being responsible for the disciplinary areas occupational therapy and occupational science as well as leading scholarly activities to assure a strong and relevant link between research and education.  Curricular development and general administration are also part of regular working tasks. As professor, you should want to lead a nationally and internationally renowned research and education agenda. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a creative and ambitious faculty/research group. It is particularly important to have a broad competence and interest in leading research and education within occupational therapy and occupational science as well as to have demonstrated experience of academic leadership. 

The appointment as a professor may, by special agreement, be combined with a position with clinical part-time employment in SLL, Stockholm County Council.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet). The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or have otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. 

The applicant should be a registered occupational therapist and have a doctoral degree in occupational therapy, occupational science, or comparable and clinical experience as an occupational therapist. The candidate should have a strong and internationally established and recognized research agenda in occupational therapy and occupational science. The applicant should have documented contributions to- and demonstrated strong engagement in the leadership of education and research in occupational therapy and occupational science, both theoretically and in practice. 

In the assessment of the application, weight will be given to the educational and scientific portfolio as well as that the candidate has demonstrated an interest in leadership. The evaluation of the scientific portfolio will take into account research within the area of occupational therapy and occupational science as well as the degree to which the candidate can attract extramural funding nationally and internationally. Documented leadership can consist of demonstrating excellence in growing an organization, management of human resources, experience administrating external research funding, and ability to network and collaborate nationally and internationally. The evaluation of the educational portfolio will take into account of leading, planning, carrying through, and redesigning curricular activities as well as supervision and examinations. The clinical portfolio is evaluated based on contributions to occupational therapy practice. The work tasks will be tailored to some degree based on the applicants competencies and interests as well as the organization’s needs. This can also evolve and change over time. 

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: educational expertise (3), research expertise (3), leadership development and collaboration expertise (2), clinical expertise (1). 

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
