The Department
The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest clinical departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department is divided into divisions, which in turn consist of one or more research groups. The core activities are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The department has three main profile areas: allergy, cardiovascular medicine, and inflammatory diseases.

The Division of Dermatology and Venereology is a division within the department with an extensive commission in undergraduate education, research, and doctoral education. The research profile consists of translational clinical and experimental research, primarily into inflammation, but with increasing activities also regarding skin cancer. The experimental activities of the division are performed at the Centre for Molecular Medicine (CMM) and at BioClinicum on the grounds of the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.

The Division of Dermatology and Venereology has a substantial commission in education, with responsibility for all undergraduate education in the field at the medical program of the Karolinska Institutet. Other educational commissions include graduate courses and clinical training courses.

Duties 
The employment has a focus on education and research, with placement at the Department of Medicine, Solna, Karolinska Institutet (70% of full time), combined with clinical duty as a specialist competent physician in dermatology and venereology at the Karolinska University Hospital (30% of full time).

The duties include running, managing, and developing the Karolinska Institutet’s undergraduate education within the division, to ensure a high education quality with strong research connections and elements of internationalization. The task includes collaboration with the clinical departments at which the education is held, and to act as a representative for dermatology and venereology within the undergraduate education, for instance in working on committees and updating course and programme syllabi.

The successful candidate is expected to perform internationally competitive translational clinical and experimental research within the field and lead an independent research group with external financing.

The position is combined with clinical work as specialist competent physician in dermatology and venereology within the patient stream Inflammatory skin diseases, in the patient area Gastroenterology/Skin/Rheumatology within Theme Area: Inflammation and Infection at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Administrative tasks at the Karolinska Institutet and within the department may come to be included in the duties.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for employment as Professor the candidate must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development, and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at the Karolinska Institutet). The candidate must also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching, in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions’ recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher, or have obtained equivalent knowledge in some other fashion.

The position requires the ability to lead and pedagogically develop the teaching duties of the division and the department, as well as to perform internationally successful translational clinical and experimental research, and the ability to lead a research group.

As the undergraduate education is held in an increasingly complex clinical environment, a strong capacity for collaboration and innovative thinking is required.

The candidate must master spoken and written Swedish.

The position will be combined with clinical work as specialist competent physician in dermatology and venereology within the patient stream Inflammatory skin diseases, in the patient area Gastroenterology/Skin/Rheumatology within Theme Area: Inflammation and Infection at the Karolinska University Hospital, and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in dermatology and venereology as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

Bases of assessment 
The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2), and clinical expertise (2).

Experience of international collaborations in both education and research will be taken into account.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at the Karolinska Institutet.

To obtain position as specialist doctor (överläkare, biträdande överläkare, specialistläkare) at the Karolinska University Hospital, assessment of the applicant’s clinical qualifications by the hospital’s Expert Committee is mandatory.
