The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Duties
The employment has a focus on research. The ideal candidate is expected to strengthen and further develop research in epidemiology at IMM. She/he will be developing research aimed at investigating environmental factors (in a broad sense) in relation to the health of individuals. Some teaching in epidemiology at graduate and/or postgraduate level at Karolinska Institutet will be part of the duties. The position can be combined with clinical work.

Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The ideal candidate will have a strong international research profile in epidemiology and advanced epidemiologic methods, as documented by the number and quality of papers published in international journals with high impact during the last five to seven years. The applicant must have received substantial external research funding as main applicant over the last five years. Applicants must have well-documented leadership and collaboration experience. The applicant must show successful main supervision of doctoral students.

Bases of assessment 
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Experience from collaboration within interdisciplinary research and health-risk assessment is meritorious.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at Karolinska Institutet.
