At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Section of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care
At the Section for Anesthesiology and Intensive care nationally and internationally leading research in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, intensive care and pain management is conducted. A dozen research groups consider experimental processes, clinical patient-oriented and epidemiological questions with the support of a strategic research and educational platform that has been established utilizing common research funds between The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and the clinical unit of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care, Karolinska University Hospital.

Background
Over the years strategic investments have been made at the clinical side, which resulted in strong research clusters and a new generation of PIs. These initiatives now need to be established academically at The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, where we intend to gradually strengthen research activities. This includes the establishment of a position as a Senior Lecturer associated with duty as specialist competent physician at the unit of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm.

The position as Senior Lecturer corresponds to 50% of a full-time employment and is combined with a specialist medical service of about 50% of a full-time employment at the unit for Perioperative medicine and Intensive Care at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Duties
The duties include to mentor students, graduate students and postdocs in the framework of the research activities of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and / or intensive care. The person employed will conduct research within the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, and should have the potential to develop partnerships with preclinical and / or clinical research nationally and internationally. In addition, the person is expected to participate and develop training on basic and further education as part of her/his clinical activity mainly focused on the MD and nursing programs at Karolinska Institutet. The applicant need to have an MD degree and specialist exam in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine. The applicant need to be able to teach fluently in the Swedish language and should have a high clinical competence in applied clinical physiology and/or applied clinical pharmacology. The holder of the position is also expected to be active in the establishment of an efficient translational research and teaching environment in anesthesiology, perioperative and intensive care.

Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor PhD or having equivalent scientific expertise, the person must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The position will be combined with a position as specialist trained doctor in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the clinical unit of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, or corresponding competence.

The intention is that the candidate will be employed as specialist doctor in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care with the demand of Swedish authorization as MD and specialist certificate.

Bases of assessment
The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3); educational expertise (2); clinical expertise (2); leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

After an overall assessment of the candidates merits and expertise KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities.

The appointee must have undergone teaching in higher education training of 10 weeks or equivalent competence in accordance with Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If there is no such education at the time of the employment the appointee must undergone such education during the first two years of employment
