Karolinska Institutet, Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Okret (SOK)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Description of project and work
The work will be performed in the research group of Professor Sam Okret. We study endocrine aspects of lymphoma. Although not generally considered as endocrine-regulated malignancies, epidemiological data and our own experimental results show that lymphomas are under control by sex hormones, particularly estrogens (see e.g. Yakimchuk et al. Leukemia 25, 1103, 2011; Yakimchuk et al. Blood, 123, 2054, 2014; Talaberg et al. Oncotarget, 7, 20718, 2016).
We study basic mechanisms of disease pathogenesis in relation to endocrine control of lymphoma initiation and progression with the hope of exploring new therapeutic targets for lymphomas. The work is focused on, but not limited to, understanding involved signaling pathways, alterations in gene expression and gene networks following endocrine changes.  We also analyze estrogen receptors expression as a prognostic marker in primary lymphoma samples. In addition, we investigate the role of the tumor microenvironment in lymphomas for the response and how to overcome drug resistance. To approach these issues we use e.g. mice lymphoma models, cell culture techniques, gene-editing using the CRISPR/Cas9 technology and immunochemical techniques.
The successful applicant will lead independent studies into above research areas but the precise projects will be defined after discussions between applicant and supervisor where the applicant’s track record, drive, interest, and ideas will be considered. The postdoc project will provide opportunities for the candidate to develop into an independent researcher. Moreover, the applicant will be encouraged to apply for competitive national and international postdoctoral fellowships and career grants, and will receive support in those activities.

The position is initially for 2 years with a possible extension after evaluation.

Expectations
You will be supervised by Prof. Sam Okret and work alongside and collaborate with a senior researcher and Lab Manager, another postdoc and PhD student. You will work on your own projects and present your data at lab meetings and national and international conferences; and you will contribute to the overall maintenance of the laboratory and the collaborative spirit of the group.

Qualifications
The applicant should hold a PhD and have experience in lymphoma biology; have wide experience in cell biology, molecular biology, especially molecular endocrinology and with working with animals (mice); should be able to design and conduct projects independently but should also be able to work in collaborative settings; and should possess good communication skills and be able to speak and write very well in English.

Entry requirement
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English;

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. Name, affiliation, phone number, and email address of three references (don’t include reference letters).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
