Karolinska Institutet, One of KI´s departments

Karolinska Institutet (KI) launches an investment programme to recruit leading junior researchers with particularly outstanding scientific merits and future potential. The investments are being made in medical science for both pre-clinical and clinical research and include up to eight positions as senior researcher (five years financing). Additionally, the investments include up to twelve positions as assistant professor (four years financing) and up to eight positions as senior researcher (extensions of existing assistant professorships at KI, two years financing), announced separately. The appointments are financed by KI’s Board of Research. All researchers in receipt of these strategic funds are expected to work as research group leaders.

Eligibility

The successful applicant should conduct internationally leading research within his/her field. The applicant should have his/her own established research line, and show great promise for continuing to conduct research of very high quality and for obtaining external financing.

Applicants must have graduated with a PhD or attained a corresponding level of scientific competence after January 1st, 2006. Individuals who graduated earlier than 2006 may eligible if there is particular reason for them to claim deductable time, such as in the event of parental leave and sickness. Reason, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation. 

Assessment criteria

The applicant should be well-published ininternationally leading journalsinhis/her field in recent years, and occupya prominent place in the list of authors, preferably as senior author. He/she should also occupy a prominent place in the international scientific community, for example as  invited speaker at scientific conferences,  peer-reviewer of papers submitted for publication or grant applications,  member of examination boards, and thesis supervisor at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level.

The applicant should also have obtained, as the principal applicant, good, long-term external financing in recent years and must have good promise for obtaining additional financing.

Applicants will be assessed on their scientific expertise mainly based on two assessment criteria; the applicant’s competence and the scientific quality of the project.

Position as Senior Researcher

Applicants rewarded a position by The Board of Research are expected to negotiate the employment conditions with the head of one (or more) relevant department(s) at KI.

The recipient department will be assigned a framework amount of SEK 1,200,000 per appointment per year for a maximum of five years. The funds are intended to finance positions and are to be used for salaries and overhead costs.

The position as senior researcher is to be appointed on a permanent basis and to commence at one of KIs departments not more than twelve months after the allocation decision has been taken by the Board of Research. The employment is to be agreed with the recipient department, which is responsible for the salary.
