The Department of Clinical Science and Education, Södersjukhuset, pursues undergraduate education, research education and internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and injuries. The goal of all activities is to improve human health.

Division
The employment as Professor in paediatrics will be combined with clinical duty at Sachs' Children and Youth Hospital. Sachs' Children and Youth Hospital is part of Södersjukhuset (Stockholm South General Hospital) and is one of Sweden’s largest children’s hospitals. The organisation offers specialised paediatric care for children and young people and employs approximately 600 people. The hospital’s accident and emergency department is one of the largest in the country, visited by in the region of 30,000 patients annually, while Södersjukhuset’s maternity unit generates approximately 1,000 admissions to Sachs' neonatal unit. A great deal of research activity is linked to Sachs' Children and Youth Hospital. Researcher’s at the clinic are organised into various research groups, as well as five large research networks (lung/allergies, diabetes, gastrointestinal, cardiology/neurology/neonatology and global health) within which researchers regularly meet.

The large patient volumes, together with well-defined patient flows, increase the already good opportunities for clinical research, and the further reinforcement of academic competence and leadership within paediatric research at Södersjukhuset is therefore of the greatest importance.

Duties
The professorship is focused on research. The position of professor and specialist in paediatrics means responsibility for clinical research in the field of paediatrics at the department, as well as working to develop research into endemic paediatric illnesses in collaboration with other departments within KI. One important part of this work will be to take part in developing academic leadership for the research conducted in the field of paediatrics and to lead the development of clinical epidemiology at Sachs' Children and Youth Hospital, Södersjukhuset through local, national and international collaborations.

The position is combined with the post of specialist pediatrician in the field of paediatrics at Södersjukhuset, where clinical experience and knowledge are of the utmost value in being able to optimally organise clinical research. The duties involved in the position are divided into 30% clinical and 70% research/education.

Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet the person must have demonstrated both research- and teaching expertise as well as management-, development- and collaborative expertise and clinical expertise. The eligibility requirements for appointment as a professor at KI are specified in the "Appointment procedure for teachers at Karolinska Institutet".

Applicants must have experience of clinical work and supervision at different levels as well as a very good ability to express the Swedish language in both speech and writing.

The employment will be combined with a position as specialist trained physician in paediatrics at healthcare facility for medical training and research. Therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in paediatric medicine or equivalent, as well as fulfill the The National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the successful candidate fulfills Södersjukhuset’s criteria for employment as assistant chief physician or chief physician, then the candidate will be offered this position.

Bases of assessment
The professorship has focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), clinical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Experience of clinical epidemiological research is a merit. Applicants should also demonstrate a proven ability to obtain research grants.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the candidates merits and expertise KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities.
