The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
Aging Research Center (ARC), Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS). The Aging Research Center (ARC) is a national multidisciplinary research center focusing on older people and aging. ARC was established with support from the Swedish Council for Working Life and Research (FAS) and is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Stockholm University (SU). For administrative purposes ARC is attached to the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS), KI and it is physically located at Gävlegatan 16 in Stockholm.

Duties
Social gerontology concerns the study of how individual characteristics and the social environment contribute to the aging process.

The person we are seeking will lead and be responsible for the work carried out in the social gerontology sector, which is one of three research sectors at ARC. Using cross-sectional and longitudinal data based on interview surveys and register data, the group studies aging and the living conditions of older people. Current research areas include: the health of older people, as well as health trends at the population level and changes in health behavior over time. Another research area is the relationship between previous living conditions, both as a child and as an adult, and a person’s physical and cognitive health later in life. Needs for medical care and social services, inter-generational social relations and the significance of the family for older people as well as health inequalities are further examples of the type research carried out in the sector.

The post includes research, management and supervision within the framework of our existing research projects as well as coordinating and developing the sector’s research focus and expertise.


Entry requirements
To be appointed as professor the applicant should have proven academic skills as well as showing competence in the areas of management, development and collaboration. The applicant should have academic expertise in sociology, social epidemiology or other social science. Researchers from other scientific backgrounds who have worked in the field of social gerontology are also welcome to apply.  Experience of project management is required as well as international publication in the areas of living conditions, health, lifestyle and/or inequality.

The applicant should have documented experience of using statistical methods as well as analyzing data from registers and/or large surveys. Experience of leading a population-based study is desirable.

ARC encourages inter-disciplinary research which is why experience of multidisciplinary work is an advantage.

In addition the applicant should have experience of teaching, supervision of doctoral students as well as personnel planning and management.

The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).
