Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för medicin, Huddinge

Division

The Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC) has recently been established as a research collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to addresses a variety of strategic research areas. Out of these, our lab focuses on the study of age-related diseases. The ICMC creates a unique interface between academia and industry, provides outstanding infrastructure, and aims to develop innovative therapeutic approaches.

Research group and project

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Christian Riedel at the ICMC, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. The research group studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate aging and age-related disease. Focus of the fully funded position is to investigate aging-regulatory signaling pathways and their downstream events, with an interest in aging-regulatory transcription factors, their fundamental mechanisms of action, and how they synergize with cofactors, the chromatin landscape, as well as higher-order chromatin structure in the regulation of stress-resistance and longevity promoting genes. Insights from this work shall provide a mechanistic basis for treatments of progeria and age-related diseases in humans.

Our research uses diverse model systems, most importantly the nematode C. Elegans and mammalian tissue culture, and combines biochemistry (e.g. proteomics), cytology, and high-throughput sequencing techniques (e.g. ChIP-Seq, mRNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq) with high-throughput genetic screening approaches (RNAi), to understand the regulation of aging at molecular and mechanistic resolution.

The position is for 1 year with the possibility of up to three years of extension.

Duties

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, and the presentation/publication of results.

Qualifications/Entry requirements

The applicant should have a PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Physiology, or similar. He/she is expected to be a talented, highly motivated, and hardworking researcher, with a good understanding of biochemical, molecular biology, and genetic techniques. Applicants with backgrounds in transcriptional regulation, epigenetics, aging biology, or endocrine signaling, as well as prior experience with either C. elegans or tissue culture systems are particularly encouraged to apply. Also prior experience in next generation sequencing methodologies, proteomics, or bioinformatics will be appreciated. Strong emphasis will be placed on the applicants’ scientific track-record, in particular peer-reviewed publications.

All applicants should have good communication skills and be proficient in spoken and written English.

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow, only if he/she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of this postdoc employment.

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. A cover letter or letter of motivation (no more than half a page).
  2. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work.
  3. A complete list of publications
  4. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  5. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labor unions or student organizations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
