Management of Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet (KI) seeks a new Vice-Chancellor renowned as a skilled academic leader.

KI is a medical university with the mission to conduct research and education of the highest quality. KI’s vision is to make a significant contribution to the improvement of human health. Achieving this vision will require groundbreaking research, the translation of medical advances into societal applications, and the successful provision of highly-skilled professionals to the workforce.

Karolinska Institutet is a Swedish government authority with the Vice-Chancellor (President) as its director-general. The Vice-Chancellor leads KI under the direction of the University Board (Konsistoriet), a remit that necessitates academic leadership in combination with the particular demands of Swedish legislation. KI’s roles and networks extend far beyond Sweden’s national borders, whereby the expectations, needs and requirements of the international community must also constantly be sustained.

The Vice-Chancellor shall, with great integrity

  • be a trustworthy representative of Karolinska Institutet
  • have demonstrated effective leadership skills
  • have the ability to safeguard academic independence while responsibly serving as a publicly accountable director-general
  • be an internationally renowned and respected scientist with a solid record of pedagogical acumen and be well-versed in the field of medical science
  • have a solid understanding of how a medical university interacts with the healthcare sector
  • demonstrate good communication skills and a relevant network
  • protect scientific freedom and develop an academic culture with high ethical standards

As the appointment involves interactions on behalf of KI with numerous internal and external parties, strong interpersonal skills are necessary.

KI pledges to uphold diversity, equality and equal opportunity for all within the university. The Vice-Chancellor must be strongly committed to these issues and to sustainability in all aspects of the university’s activities.

The eligibility requirements laid out in chapter 2, section 11, of the Higher Education Ordinance (qualified for appointment as a professor or senior lecturer) must be fulfilled. The Vice-Chancellor is appointed by the government for a fixed six-year term on the recommendation of KI’s University Board (Konsistoriet).
