Postdoctoral studies in sequencing-based liquid biopsy development (scholarship)

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division

Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM) consists of several research groups and core facilities. Activities are translational in nature and include fundamental molecular cell biology studies, pre-clinical testing of therapy/ diagnostic agents and related activities, certified production of cell products for clinical use, phenotypical analysis of cells and tissues as well as clinical studies of patients treated with cell therapy agents.

Our group has expertise in the analysis of extracellular vesicles. Since these are released by all cells and found in bodily fluids, they represent promising targets for the early diagnosis of diseases, such as cancer.

Duties

We are looking for an ambitious researcher to develop methods for isolating extracellular vesicles from blood, sequencing the associated nucleic acids and analyzing this data to identify the molecular signatures of disease they carry.

Entry requirements

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

The ideal candidate would be a motivated and team-oriented individual with strong English skills and knowledge of both biology and bioinformatics. The studies will involve laboratory work including blood processing and molecular biology, as well as the bioinformatic analysis of sequencing data.

The candidate must:

• Have completed a PhD in biology, chemistry or computer science.
• Have laboratory experience in molecular biology.
• Have computer science experience working with sequencing data.
• The ability to understand and communicate in English so that they can work independently.

Location: Flemingsberg, Huddinge

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

• A complete list of publications
• A summary of current work (no more than one page)
