Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Protein Science Facility (PSF) (https://ki.se/psf) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) is a core facility providing services in protein production and protein crystallography, as well as training and access to instruments for biophysical characterization. PSF primarily caters to academic research groups at Karolinska Institutet and other Swedish universities. In protein production, we mainly work with parallel high-throughput methods for protein production but also with customized solutions and problem-solving when needed.

We now have a 12-month fixed-term research engineer position in protein production, starting in February 2025 or as soon as possible.

Your mission

The position mainly involves practical laboratory work in protein production using various expression systems such as E. coli and  HEK293, molecular biology tasks, cultivation of bacterial and eukaryotic cell cultures, protein purification, documentation, buffer preparation, and general laboratory maintenance. Problem-solving, development, and implementation of new methods are a natural part of the work. Depending on knowledge and experience, the role may also include client interactions and support for the core facility’s users. The specific responsibilities may evolve over time based on needs and expertise.

Your profile

We are looking for someone with a master degree or PhD in protein chemistry/biochemistry, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, or similar. Experience in working with high-throughput protein production platforms, molecular biological cloning work, ÄKTA systems, bacterial cultures, as well as cell culture and maintenance in a BSL2 lab is an advantage. Previous experience in a research environment, particularly in core facilities, is also desirable.

The job is independent and requires high standards of accuracy, responsibility, service-mindedness, teamwork, and planning ability. The candidate should be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and, above all, enjoy laboratory work to thrive in the role. Experience working with databases and LIMS systems is an advantage.

All documentation and much of the communication with our clients is done in English, so a good command of English is required. Great emphasis is placed on relevant experience and personal qualities.
