Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for a postdoc that, like us in the lab, reasons that skeletal muscle is a fascinating tissue that needs further investigation, particularly regarding how to improve its function in disease-induced weakness

Division

The Lanner lab aims to reveal mechanistic insights into how skeletal muscle metabolism and function declines during many common conditions/diseases (including: obesity, autoimmune diseases, and cancer). Moreover, to develop new interventions to improve the muscle metabolism and function, and thereby the quality of life for afflicted patients.

The Postdoctoral Fellow that joins the team will be investigating how a newly identified mitochondrial modulator may alter skeletal muscle function and metabolism. The work will be performed using genetically modified preclinical models. They will work in a creative, inspiring and vibrant research environment with the aim to gain new insights to molecular muscle function and adaptations as well as pathophysiological processes.

The appointment will be at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet. For more information please visit: https://ki.se/en/research/research-areas-centres-and-networks/research-groups/molecular-muscle-physiology-and-pathophysiology-lanner-lab#tab-start

The fellow will receive post-doctoral training in the laboratory of Associate Professor Johanna Lanner, who will provide mentorship and opportunities for personal and professional development and a platform for building a future career in research.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct cutting edge medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden.

Duties

You are a creative, hardworking and positive team player. You have a PhD in muscle biology, muscle metabolism, neuromuscular disease, biomedical science, or another relevant field.

You have a strong background skeletal muscle biology and working with genetically modified experimental models. Documented practical experience with animal work, functional tests, and muscle phenotyping, immunocytochemistry and imaging analysis. An understanding of transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses and R programming are considered strong merits.

You can work independently but also have the interpersonal and communication skills to succeed at working in a multidisciplinary team. You have a deep sense of responsibility, take initiatives and have capacity and flexibility to work with researchers and students with different expertise.

You have very good written and spoken English and are a good communicator, both when it comes to presentations and preparation of publications. You have good recommendations from previous supervisors/teachers.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Biomedicum, Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
