Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Within the Laboratory for Chemical Biology Sweden (LCBKI) – Biology Team

Karolinska Institutet is one of the leading medical universities in Europe. Through research and education, Karolinska Institutet contributes to improving human health. Each year, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden, CBCS, will from 2022 be a Swedish Research Council  funded infrastructure of national interest. This means that the existing capabilities will be strengthened and new capabilities and four new nodes - at Lund, Uppsala, Linköping and Gothenburg Universities, respectively, will be established. CBCS (www.CBCS.se) has been in operation since 2010 with two nodes at KI and at Umeå University, respectively, and is an infrastructure for chemical biology at Science for Life Laboratory (www.scilifelab.se) in the Chemical Biology and Genome Engineering platform. CBCS offers services for the identification of chemical tools (bioactive small-molecules) for all fields of life sciences. The infrastructure offers collaborative service and guidance within assay development, small-molecule screening and hit to chemical probe optimization. Additional service offerings in small-molecule profiling, including Cell Painting, and screening in primary and complex disease models are currently being established.

Your mission

The KI node is currently seeking a versatile biologist skilled in assay development, cell culture and small molecule screening who will help CBCS in its mission of identifying, developing and optimizing high-quality small molecule tool compounds for academic researchers.

The activities will include establishing and performing primary assays in screening format with the aim to develop and optimize specific small molecule probe compounds or profile small molecules for efficacy across cell lines, and patient models. Activities will also include evaluating different assay formats, establishing cell-based and biochemical high throughput and high content screens, working with primary patient cells or complex disease models. You will be responsible for managing projects in close collaboration with researchers from diverse backgrounds and delivering high-quality data.

Your profile

Eligible applicants will have a well-documented track record of relevance to the employment. Previous experience of assay development and small-molecule screening, and the ability to use and troubleshoot screening equipment (liquid dispensers, plate readers) is highly meritorious. Expertise in cell culture of 3-D organoid models, as well as microscopic imaging and image analysis, will also be considered valuable. You will need a strong passion for daily experimental work and an aptitude for analyzing, managing, interpreting, and reporting high quality screening data. The successful candidate must have a staff scientist mind set, be service minded and dedicated to high quality and reproducible data production, have very good interpersonal and cooperation skills, enjoy collaborative science and be flexible and capable of working independently in a structured and efficient way. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are essential, as well as documentation skills and experience with electronic lab notebooks is meritorious.

The position is placed at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics under the Research Division Chemical Biology, located at Scilifelab, where you will work closely in a team of biologists and medicinal chemists within a vibrant research community, to enable chemical biology and drug discovery innovations.

Karolinska Institutet promotes equality and values the qualities that ethnic and cultural diversity can bring to the university.
