The Institute of Environmental Medicine consists of 18 research units. The Department is involved in advanced scientific, analytical, clinical, and epidemiological research. A position as research assistant is now available in the Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, Unit of Integrative Metabolomics.

Your mission

As part of the expansion of our newly launched analytical core, we are seeking a Research assistant to work in the Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core Facility at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) at Karolinska Institutet (KI-SMMS). Your duties will include all the steps related to the analytical pipeline, including sample and instrument preparation, data processing and reporting. You will have the opportunity to work in a modern custom-built analytical facility with multiple mass spectrometers and the associated sample preparation equipment. This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic self-starter who will contribute to a wide and diverse range of projects both within the Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital as well as with the external scientific community at large. The individual will play a critical role in executing technical protocols and performing small molecule mass spectrometry using established protocols as well as contributing to the development of novel workflows and new analytical methods. The successful candidate will also be integrated into our research group, where you will have the opportunity to see your work translated into high profile scientific discoveries.

Your profile

The successful applicant is a highly motivated person who should have the following skills:

  • Minimum of undergraduate training in analytical chemistry or biomedical analyses.
  • Working knowledge of analytical laboratory instrumentation and general data processing.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Have good social skills required to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines

Characteristics regarded as an advantage are:

  • Have experience in small molecule mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Advanced training and/or education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. 
  • Familiarity with electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) applications and good documentation and laboratory practices (e.g., GLP)
  • Knowledge in statistical analyses.
