Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Our research group works in the intersection between human metabolism and data science, using modern mass spectrometry to discover new metabolites and understand their role in human physiology. We now seek a talented, driven and independent data scientist to help us solve important computational problems in this rapidly advancing field. You will have a key role in a multidisciplinary network of experimental and computational scientists, interacting with Swedish and international investigators. This position gives opportunities to tackle unique, rich data sets to discover new ways of diagnosing and treating human disease.

Your mission

You will be in charge of developing computational methods for analysis of large-scale, high-resolution mass spectrometry data. There are several possible projects, including design of algorithms for identifying novel metabolites and predicting their biochemical synthesis pathways, as well metabolic network analysis of human metabolism. Besides method development, you will be a key person for analysis of valuable data sets generated by our lab and by collaborators in our network. You will work together with leading experts in mass spectrometry and human metabolism to analyze and interpret data.

Your profile

We seek a highly motivated, creative and independent computational scientist with a keen interest in biomedical applications. The successful candidate should have a strong background in data science, including exploratory data analysis and statistical inference from large data sets; solid understanding of multivariate analysis and algorithms on common data structures such as trees, graphs, and hypergraphs; extensive experience with common technical computing platforms and programming languages; and good aptitude for data visualization to communicate analysis results in a clear way. Familiarity with mass spectrometry data, metabolic network models and stable isotope tracing is an advantage, but is not necessary. A strong aptitude for collaborative work as well as excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are required.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

What do we offer?

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct innovative medical research and provide the largest range of biomedical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is a state university, which entitles employees to several benefits such as extended holiday and a generous occupational pension. Employees also have free access to our modern gym and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group of Roland Nilsson. We have strong expertise in human and cellular metabolism, and in computational analysis of mass spectrometry data and other large data sets. We are part of the Cardiovascular Medicine Division, which features a rich variety of metabolism-oriented research and is located in the brand-new Bioclinicum building at the heart of the Karolinska Institute Solna campus. As our network of collaborators includes experimental and computational scientists both across Sweden and abroad, part of the work can be done remotely.
