Division

The Department of Laboratory of Medicine, located in Campus Flemingsberg, is one of the Karolinska Institutet’s largest departments with 7 research divisions including the Division for Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM), where the project will be carried out. 350 people are employed at the department, of which over a quarter are PhD-students. BCM provides the facilities needed for cell- and molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo. Anthony Wright’s research interests involve molecular mechanisms that affect the evolution of cancer cells, primarily in lymphoma. Projects involve studies of the ways in which adaptive mutations affect the functionality of protein regions that are often characterized by a disordered protein conformation as well as the role of interactions between cancer cells and normal cells within microenvironments in the Darwinian selection of malignant cells.

Duties and qualifications

The project builds on observations that epigenetic factors are important for the interactions between lymphoma cells and stromal cells, which form an important component of relevant microenvironments. The work will therefore focus on determining molecular mechanisms by which epigenetic factors modulate the migration of mantle cell lymphoma cells towards- and adhesion to stromal cells. A second focus will be to determine how such mechanisms are affected by mutations and relevant pharmaceutical agents. The work will be conducted using cell lines or primary cells in a co-culture system in vitro.

Prospective candidates must have several years postdoc experience and must have knowledge at a theoretical and practical level that is required to independently drive the project. Candidates must be able to function in the context of a large group of scientists and students at different career levels and must be able to coordinate the work of others or participate in teaching tasks if required. The successful candidate will be expected to develop the project and to write grant applications to enable this development.

The successful applicant will have a sound theoretical background in molecular and cellular biology including the following areas in particular: epigenetic mechanisms, gene regulation, cellular signaling, B-cell biology, B-cell malignancy as well as B-cell migration and adhesion in the context of microenvironment interactions. Practical lab experience is essential, especially in the following areas: cell culture work and experience with co-cultures, protein analysis (Western blot), flow cytometry, gene knock-down techniques and RNA expression analysis (rtPCR, qPCR). The applicant must also be able to document experience of working with genomics techniques, in particular RNAseq and ChIPseq. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is required.

Application process An application must contain the following documents in Swedish or English:

  • A personal letter and curriculum vitae
  • A copy of degree certificates and other relevant documentation
  • A list of publications with hyperlinks to PubMed
  • An abstract (max 1 page) for a hypothetical grant application to study in vitro, the role of relevant epigenetic mechanisms in the regulation of the microenvironment interactions of mantle lymphoma cells

The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.
