The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We use modern technologies that allow for detailed analysis down to single cell resolution to try to answer disease-relevant questions. We collaborate closely with clinical researchers to be able to validate our findings for its translational potential.

Your mission
The selected postdoctoral candidate will work in the research group of professor Maria Eriksson. The group study the very rare premature aging disorder Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome and the age-related accumulation of somatic mutations and its contribution to age-associated disease of the vascular wall. We use advanced next generation sequencing (nextgen) applications for genome-wide analysis and has recently demonstrated that apparently healthy human cells constantly accumulate somatic mutations during development and aging (Nat Commun, 2018, 9:800; Genome Biol. 2019, 20:285). The project includes single-cell RNA sequencing of cells from the aorta.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate who are interested in applying advanced genomic technologies and tools for understanding the mechanisms underlying age-related human diseases focusing on the vascular system. The candidate should have previous experience of bioinformatic analysis of advanced next-generation sequencing (NGS) data and is comfortable with working in a linux/unix environment. He/she should have a degree in areas relevant to the announced position (molecular life sciences, bioinformatics or computer science), and have documented knowledge in applied bioinformatics with a proven record of publications. Programming skills in Python (or a similar scripting language), alternatively in Java or C / C ++ is a strong merit but not a requirement. He /she should be able to function well in the group, able to perform his /her own experiments and to provide suggestions to other members of the group. Previous experience from experimental work using molecular biology techniques and with mice models is advantageous.

Your profile
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
