Karolinska Institutet,

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Research group

The position is placed in the research group of associate professor Kristian Dreij at the unit of Biochemical Toxicology. Dreij’s lab studies the mixtures effects of environmental pollutants with focus on genotoxicity and developmental effects using models spanning from in vitro to population studies. The aim is to provide information on modes of action for mixtures and to improve the basis of human health risk assessment.

Description of the project

We have previously established that complex mixtures of PAHs induce persistent DNA damage and signaling in human cells (Jarvis et al TAAP 2013). Moreover, that this DNA damage signaling can be used to establish in vitro-based potency factors for single and complex mixtures of PAHs (Lim et al EST 2015, Dreij et al EST 2017). This project will be focused on studying mechanisms and potency of genotoxicity from mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) using environment samples, standard and technical mixtures in human cell lines. The project will include the use of traditional methods to study genotoxicity (e.g. Comet assay) and DNA damage signaling (e.g. western blot), but the post doc is expected to develop more high-through put protocols for these measurements.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. from an appropriate discipline such as molecular biology or toxicology with in-depth understanding of air pollution toxicology. A strong background in standard cell and molecular biology techniques for studying genotoxicity, gene and protein expression are required. Proven experience in using tissue culturing for studying cellular effects and mechanisms of environmental air pollution is a substantial merit. Basic or advanced understanding of analytical chemistry and atmospheric sciences is considered as an asset. Previous post doc position is a substantial merit.

We are searching for a highly motivated postdoc who can work independently and develop his/her own ideas and visions. Candidates should be creative, and have strong communication skills. The ability to express oneself in speech and writing in English at a high level and interact effectively and work productively in a team will be considered important. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
