Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
Health and Everyday Life among people with Neurological Disorders (HELD) is an interdisciplinary research group that targets knowledge gaps identified in the health care sector and in issues concerning rehabilitation and everyday lives among people with long-term neurological disorders. The research includes and utilizes the perspectives of the persons/clients/patients and their families/significant others, and professionals. The research group is now in a phase of expanding the research agenda to include a stronger focus on caregiving. https://ki.se/en/nvs/the-held-research-group.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
This project is about occupations of caregiving practices involving older adults and professional caregivers.  Although caregiving will be situated in a repertoire of everyday occupations, the focus is particularly on the work of professional caregivers and potential needs for the development of competencies through continuing education. Online technologies have been proposed as potentially relevant in supporting professional caregivers with information or support, albeit most focus has been on using the internet to provide interventions to improve psychosocial health among family caregivers. Little information is available about the use of online technologies with professional caregivers for competency development although there can be potential benefits. The overall aim of this project is to generate knowledge about, and to build relevant methods to support, the work of caregiving practices by actively involving professional caregivers and older adults. The PhD student will be actively involved in the implementation of the studies and part of a larger EIT Health funded project related to the questions in these studies.  The PhD student will have an active role in collecting data, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and writing manuscripts for publication.
