Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Functional genomics

Division
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics consists of 11 research divisions which are involved in teaching and research within the fields of protein chemistry, redox biochemistry, metabolism, lipid research, inflammation research, structural biochemistry, molecular biochemistry, tissue biology, and developmental biology.

Area of responsibilities/description of work
A postdoctoral position to study the role of global transcription factor activity in cellular lineage determination (Wei et al., Nature Biotechnology 36: 521-529, 2018) is available immediately in the Division of Functional Genomics in the laboratory of Professor Jussi Taipale (https://ki.se/en/mbb/jussi-taipale-group).
The laboratory focuses on the study of transcriptional control of cell growth, using functional genomics and systems biology, and mouse genetic models. Jussi Taipale heads research groups at Karolinska Institute, University of Cambridge and University of Helsinki. The research groups consist of both experimental biologists and computer scientists. Current lines of work include high-throughput determination of binding sites and binding specificities of human transcription factors, and using this information to identify regulatory elements that control cell growth during normal development or in cancer. Identified elements are validated using cultured cells and mouse genetic models (see for example Hallikas et al., Cell 124:47-59, 2006; Kivioja et al., Nature Methods 9:72-74, 2011; Sur et al., Science 338:1360-1363, 2012; Jolma et al., Cell 152:327-339, 2013; Yan et al., Cell 154:801-813, 2013; Jolma et al., Nature 527:384-388, 2015; Yin et al., Science 356: eaaj2239, 2017; Zhu et al., Nature 562: 76-81, 2018).

The position is a Project employment.

Qualifications
To qualify the applicant must hold a doctoral degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate in Systems Biology, Molecular Biology, Biological engineering, Medicine or similar along with computational experience for analysing large sets of data. Applicants must be able to work independently and have good communication skills in English.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. We especially encourage applications from those who expect to complete their PhD within one year from current date and those who have completed their PhD less than 12 months ago.

Application process
An employment application should be a maximum of seven A4 pages in total, and must contain the following documents in English:

-  One page cover letter highlighting your 2 most important first-author publications in major international scientific journals

-  Two page CV including a list of major publications (reference only, no abstracts or full papers)

Two letters of recommendation, 1-2 pages each

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
