Karolinska Institutet, Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology

An exciting opportunity to be part of the Karolinska Institutet biomedical research at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC). MTC conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 80 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national and international collaborations.

Division
A postdoctoral research position is now available in the laboratory of Immunology and Oncology led by Dr Lisa Westerberg (http://ki.se/en/mtc/lisa-westerberg-group). The Westerberg laboratory is located in the top modern Biomedicum building with shared infrastructure for advanced technology platforms and built for interdisciplinary collaborations. Ongoing research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms in development of immunodeficiency diseases with high incidence of autoimmunity and cancer (Baptista et al, Nat Comms 2016; Keszei et al, J Clin Invest 2018).

Duties
This research builds upon work in the Westerberg laboratory aiming to identifying the molecular mechanisms of immunodeficiency diseases with specific focus on disorders of the actin cytoskeleton. Using rare patient samples and unique animal models combined with state of the art imaging and genomic approaches, we aim at understanding the nuclear function of actin regulators in hematopoietic cells with the goal of developing novel explanations and treatment strategies for primary immunodeficiency disease and haematological malignancy. The successful applicant will use a wide range of techniques including mouse genetics, tissue culture including retro/lentivirus work, flow cytometry, microscopy including live cell imaging, and RNAseq analysis. The successful applicant will have excellent communication and organisational skills, a PhD in immunology, cell biology or oncology or a relevant area (or be in the final stages of completion). Postdoctoral fellows are expected to lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis both in the laboratory and with external collaborators, and guide students. The ability to work in a team is essential.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
