Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
The vascular surgery group is a section within MMK. Many of the affiliated researchers are clinically active. The vascular group is led by professor Ulf Hedin, and consists of several teams, the carotid group “BiKE” (Hedin/Perisic), the Stockholm Aneurysm Research group (STAR, Roy/Hultgren) and the thrombosis/trauma group (Wahlgren). STAR is a growing group at MMK, an informal network holding epidemiological research projects as well as translational, radiological and clinical. The group incorporates 20-25 persons, including researchers, postdocs and PhD-students. Our research focus on diagnostics, treatment and interventions for patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA).   STAR has a strong collaboration between clinical departments, the laboratory at Bioclinicum, KTH, national and international research groups. For more information on our research group see our homepage. https://ki.se/en/mmk/vascular-surgery

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
This doctoral student project aims at exploring and refining different aspects of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious complications in vascular surgery. The project includes a clinical randomized, controlled study aimed at prevention of surgical site infections, comprising both clinical end-points and patient-reported outcome measures. The other studies included in the project encompass evaluation of radiological diagnosis of aortic graft infections and novel methods for treating chronic ischaemic ulcers. The PhD-student and the supervisors will assess and if deemed necessary revise the individual studies in the preliminary project plan. The PhD-student will, under supervision, create the individual study cohorts, partake in the practical aspects of the studies, including data collection as well as, carrying out all statistical analyses, and writing the manuscripts. The student will participate in international and national surgical meetings to present relevant data, and participate in education of junior medical students, interns and peers within the field.

  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

Follow the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.

*If you claim equivalent knowledge, follow the instructions on the web page Assessing equivalent knowledge for general eligibility for doctoral education.

B) Specific eligibility requirement
