Department of Medicine, Solna, Dermatology and Venereology division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The successful candidate will work in the wound healing research group headed by Dr. Ning Xu Landén (www.xulandenlab.com). The group belongs to the section of Dermatology and Venereology, Karolinska University Hospital Solna and the Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine (MWLC), and is physically located at the Centre of Molecular Medicine (CMM; https://www.cmm.ki.se/). The research is performed in an interdisciplinary setting with strong collaboration with clinical departments and other national and international research groups. The group has extensive experience in non-coding RNA research with well-established methodologies for studying the expression and function of non-coding RNAs in skin wound healing.

Duties
The chronic non-healing wound is a common and severe medical problem with unclear pathogenesis. The discovery of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as powerful gene regulators provides hope in the quest to develop novel RNA-based treatments for a wide variety of diseases; however, the role of ncRNAs in human skin wound healing remains largely unexplored. We aim to reveal the expression and functional signatures of ncRNAs (primarily focusing on microRNAs, circular RNAs, and long ncRNAs) in human skin wound healing, and to identify ncRNAs that may be targeted in wound therapy. The current method spectrum of the group is centered around molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry with human cells and tissues as well as mouse models but will be expanded.
The task of the postdoctoral researcher will include study design, experiments, analysis and presentation of research data in the form of scientific publications, grant applications and at meetings and conferences, as well as supervision of students. We offer an intellectually stimulating and welcoming working environment, and we look for a talented and motivated co-worker to develop our next breakthrough ideas.

Entry requirements
Required skills of the successful candidate are:

  • A PhD or in exceptional cases expected to obtain soon, in the area of molecular biology, cell biology or biochemistry.
  • Extensive experience with tissue culture, molecular and biochemical techniques.
  • Extensive experience in RNA biology (ideally with proven expertise in long-non-coding RNA research) or wound healing research using in vivo models or skin immunity.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality scientific outputs with a strong publication record.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently but also as a part of a large team.
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English and good communication skills.

We will look favorably upon if the candidate has experiences in one or more of the following areas:

  • Biochemical approaches to study the interaction of RNA, protein and DNA.
  • DNA methylation
  • RNA modification
  • High-throughput screen
  • Single-cell transcriptomics
  • Bioinformatic skills, especially analysis of large data sets of high-throughput sequencing.
  • Supervision of students.
  • Method development.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.
