Department
At the Department of Public Health Sciences we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology. The research is aimed at analysing health determinants on the population level, and developing and evaluating preventative structural and individualised measures, including legislation and guidelines. The field also includes health economics, health systems research and implementation research. Our activities have a strongly international flavour, and the Department's researchers are scientific advisers to authorities and other decision-makers on the regional, national and international level. The Department is divided into research groups operating within the fields of global health, public health epidemiology and social medicine with a total of 140 employees. In addition, we have around 80 PhD students. This position is located in the Social medicine, infectious diseases and migration research group.

The position is located within the Global health - Health systems and policy research group, subgroup “health care quality and implementation”.  Health systems and policy research cover both research on and for policy. Our vision is to achieve health and equity in an interdependent world by improving health systems and policies. We strive to contribute to knowledge generation and knowledge sharing through multidisciplinary research, education and policy dialogue for improved coverage, quality, and equity of health systems. We use a systems perspective on global health while focusing on specific and well-defined topics and research questions. Improving the use of medicines is one of the major topics within the group especially the use of antibiotics and addressing its adverse impact for both public health and the environment.

The Licentiate education project and the duties of the student

The licentiate education project will support the process evaluation of an innovative project using scanning and Smart Paper Technology to process health data in Tanzania which is implemented within a collaboration with Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania and ShIFO, a non-governmental organization located in Stockholm, Sweden.

The focus of the research project will be to lead the work on acceptability and feasibility of the scanning process and Smart Paper Technology, as well as an assessment of data quality and data use. The project is implemented in one district in Southern Tanzania within a project to improve maternal and newborn health. The project will inform the potential scalability of this innovative way to process health data.

The student will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary international research environment and draw on expertise in public health, implementation science and qualitative research and other relevant disciplines. The student is expected to contribute to the study design, analysis, and writing of manuscripts and publication of results. The student shall also assist with the implementation and continuous policy exchange to keep stakeholders involved into the study.

The student will participate in the doctoral/licentiate degree courses at KI, and is also expected to contribute to teaching and research dissemination.
