Karolinska Institutet, MEB

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

Description of research group and project
Our pediatric respiratory epidemiology research group studies genetic and environmental risk factors for the development of asthma, allergies and other common childhood disorders. Causes, consequences as well as co-morbidity between asthma and other diseases are also investigated in large population-based studies. Unique resources at the department – such as the Swedish Twin Registry, large prospective studies, record linkage capabilities and access to clinical data as well as biological material – are effectively utilised.

Duties and responsibilities:
Post-doc positions (1-2) in pediatric respiratory epidemiology are available, with focus on studying risks and consequences of common childhood disorders including asthma. Large, population-based cohorts and linkages between the national health registers and the Swedish Twin Registry will be utilised along with appropriate measures of health and the environment. Desirable is a familiarity with using large data and study designs that account for familial confounding (within twin/sibling/cousin and longitudinal within-individual comparisons). Active participation in two large twin projects exploring genetic and epigenetic determinants for respiratory diseases comprises a central component of the research.

The post-doctoral fellows will be involved in all parts of the projects, ranging from generating own research ideas and supervision of students, to day-to-day data management and statistical analysis.

Preparation of publications for submission to peer-reviewed journals will be central activities.

Skills and personal qualities
The applicant should have a background in medicine or epidemiology. It is required that the he/she has previous experience in a range of epidemiological and biostatistical techniques using health data or life course modeling. It is advantageous if the candidate has expertise in analysing register-based data with family design, using SAS, STATA or R, and has experience in supervising students. Some knowledge of complex trait genomics is desirable.

The applicant should be highly collegial, experienced in working in “team science” contexts, possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, know how to successfully multitask, and should be able to describe past examples of having developed structured approaches to solving unanticipated and complex problems.

Individuals eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher should have completed their PhD studies within the last three years. Individuals who graduated earlier could be considered under special circumstances. Experience with publishing research articles and very good knowledge of English, both oral and written, is a requirement since the group is part of an international research environment. Some basic knowledge of Swedish is desirable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of previous work with epidemiology, biostatistical or genotype data
  • Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
