Division

Marco Gerlings research group at the department of Biosciences and Nutrition is looking for a Postdoctoral fellow for the period of one year. The position will be financed by a Postdoc scholarhsip paid out by KI. See below the criterias for being granted a Postdoc scholarship at KI.

Duties

You will work in the Cancer Cell Invasion lab, which performs translational research on gastrointestinal cancers. Your task will be to disentangle tumor-normal cell crosstalks at the leading edge of pancreatic cancers and liver metastases of diverse primary tumors. You will use heterotypic organoid models and other in vitro tools to study the interactions of cancer cells with their directly adjacent normal cells, delineating the mechanisms of competition by which tumor cells replace healthy parenchymal cells. These in vitro studies will be the focus of your work. You will use samples from human tumors to validate your findings in ex vivo cultures and patient material.

You will also work with mouse models of these cancer types to study and perturb tumor invasion. Your studies aim to identify targetable pathways that mediate the replacement of normal cells by invading tumor cells.

Qualifications

For the position, a solid background in cell culture is imperative. This includes experience in the isolation of tumors from primary tumor tissues and familiarity with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which will serve to create different host tissues in co-culture with tumor cells. A hands-on understanding of 3D cell culture setups is crucial. The candidate must also be proficient in various molecular and cellular techniques, especially histology, immunohistochemistry, and protein expression analysis. Furthermore, the expertise in working with heterotypic organoid models and familiarity with drug testing on patient-derived samples will be advantageous. Experience with mouse models, as gained from prior research engagements, will be a particular merit. Given the translational nature of the research, skills in confocal microscopy and flow cytometry are required. The ideal candidate would have demonstrated experience in these areas, as well as a proven track record of successful collaboration and team-oriented endeavors.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: in the Neo building on the south Campus of KI in Flemingsberg.
