Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

You are welcome to join a successful genuinely translational research group at KI. In a well-established network of cardiovascular research, our group is focused on identification of disease mechanisms of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease as well as development of novel cardioprotective strategies in acute myocardial infarction. The clinical importance of these mechanisms is subsequently investigated in well-defined patient cohorts with coronary artery disease, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia.

Duties

The Cardiology Unit at Department of Medicine, Solna has a postdoc scholarship position in cardiovascular research open for a highly motivated scientist. The project is focused on problems related to endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Studies will investigate mechanisms driving the development of endothelial and cardiac injury with focus on the increased risk among patients with type 2 diabetes. A particular focus is to continue our successful project exploring the role of red blood cells and their interaction with the heart and the endothelium during myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. By using red blood cells collected from patient cohorts, molecular mechanisms and novel treatment strategies in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury are investigated. The studies are mainly performed in models of isolated hearts and arteries but also in vivo. The appointment will be for two years with a possible extension for up to two additional years.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a strong research background in experimental and/or translational cardiovascular research documented by publications of studies related to cardiovascular disease. The applicant should have documented experience from studies of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion in isolated heart models and/or in vivo models. Experience from laboratory methods including Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and cell cultures is expected. A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he or she has obtained a PhD. Previous postdoc experience is a strong merit. We welcome a creative, hardworking, and enthusiastic team-player to our group. The candidate is expected to take part in experimental design, experimentation, presentation, and preparation of publications. Personal suitability and scientific expertise are highly valued. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of tree years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location

The position is located within the Cardiology unit, Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group of professor John Pernow within the Cardiology unit at BioClinicum at Karolinska University Hospital, Solna. The unit conducts translational and clinical research in a wide area of cardiovascular disease of internationally high standard. The focus of the research group is to explore the mechanisms underlying development of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis caused by cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes and hypercholesterolemia as well as development of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in experimental models and in clinical investigations. Our focus is to explore scientific problems of high clinical relevance for cardiovascular disease. For further information, please see:
