Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Division

The postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge (KI South Campus). Our research aims to raise awareness of the relationship between physical activity and health, and of the causes of impaired body functions such as muscle wasting in disease or aging. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the Unit of Clinical Physiology at the Karolinska University Hospital. Traditional metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analyses in various tissues as well as in primary cell cultures.

Duties

The project concerns the post-COVID syndrome ("long covid") and aims to elucidate plausible mechanisms explaining exercise intolerance/symptom worsening in this patient group and to improve the physiological understanding of these symptoms. The project will involve a comprehensive series of physiological and molecular assessments at baseline and after acute exercise. The candidate is expected to lead this research project under the supervision of Division Head Thomas Gustafsson and Drs. Tommy Lundberg and Helene Rundqvist at the Division of Clinical Physiology. In addition, the candidate may participate in and support other research activities within the division to enhance scientific output.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with strong knowledge in clinical exercise physiology and experience working with patients/human subjects. Experience with clinical trials, experimental studies, and physiological assessments (e.g., neurophysiological function, VO2max, respiratory function, muscle strength and physical function) is an advantage. Knowledge and experience in molecular biology techniques and blood and muscle tissue collection is also an advantage. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the postdoctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
