Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Medicine, Huddinge, Lipid laboratory

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position in human fat cell biology in the research group of Prof Mikael Rydén and Dr Niklas Mejhert.

Research environment
The Lipid Laboratory at the Department of Medicine (H7), Karolinska Institutet focuses on studies of human adipose tissue and its pathophysiological role in promoting metabolic complications such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. Our group is composed of about 15 scientists and support staff. We have a long track record in the field of translational medicine and several international collaborations resulting in important contributions to the research field. Our work is based on examinations in large, carefully phenotyped prospective clinical cohorts and on well-established in vitro cell models using a number of standard and state-of-art methodologies (e.g. single cell RNA sequencing, multicolor flow cytometry, high throughput screens and cell phenotype analyses) as well as in-house developed techniques. We are now in an expansion phase due to our involvement in two large collaborative efforts to determine the role of the lipid droplet (The ERC Synergy project SPHERES) and the immunometabolic milieu (the NovoNordisk foundation project MeRIAD) of human adipose tissue in the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Position
One postdoctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in molecular and cell biology studies of mature adipocytes.

Qualifications
To qualify, the applicant must hold a PhD in the field of molecular biology, biomedicine or medicine. Alternatively, the applicant can have a scheduled date for PhD-dissertation. In the latter case, however, the employment can only be approved once the applicant has been awarded his/her doctoral degree.

Requirements
The applicant, ideally applying for his/her first postdoctoral position, should have experience from work in a translational research environment and excellent skills in standard molecular biology techniques as well as cell culture work including primary cell systems. Experience in in characterizing mature fat cells using techniques such as flow cytometry, and advanced microscopy of adipose tissue/isolated adipocytes (including live cell imaging, immunohistochemistry and image analysis) are an extra plus as well as good knowledge of cell organelle isolation and murine studies (including license to handle animals). A basic education in the field of biomedicine/medicine is an advantage given that most of our research questions are initiated based on findings in clinical cohorts. As our research is performed with a translational perspective, our work implies handling of human samples and close collaboration with clinicians but will also entail targeted studies in animal models. We are looking for a curious and ambitious person that is eager to learn and has the capacity to collaborate in teams.

What we can offer
We can offer an excellent environment for translational medicine and research at the forefront in the field of human metabolism. Our international collaborations enable short-term stays in other groups and we expect that generated findings are presented by the fellows at international meetings.

The position is for 2 years.

Duties are to be taken on as soon as possible.

Location: Flemingsberg
