Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Eriksson (MER)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are a group of scientists that use modern technologies that allow for detailed analysis down to single-cell resolution to try to answer disease-relevant fundamental questions in biology. We collaborate closely with clinical researchers to be able to validate our findings for its translational potential.

Division
The research group of Professor Maria Eriksson is seeking for a postdoctoral researcher. The research group aims to identify novel genetic mechanisms of aging with a special focus on somatic mutations and their contribution to age-associated disease. The group use sequencing applications for genome-wide analysis and has recently demonstrated that apparently healthy human cells constantly accumulate somatic mutations during development and aging (Nat Commun, 2018, 9:800; Genome Biol. 2019, 20:285). While the majority of mutations have no functional significance, some may contribute to disease and aging or be directly disease-causative. However, little is known about the contribution of somatic mutations to aging and age-associated disease.

Duties
The applicant is expected to play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, and presentation/publication of research results. The research work includes standard molecular biological techniques, next generation applications for genome-wide analysis (single-cell and bulk RNA and DNA sequencing), and digital droplet PCR. The postdoctor is expected to be part of the group and to develop in accordance with the common group goals and research interests. He /She should be highly motivated, responsible, able to function well in the group, able to perform his /her own experiments and to provide suggestions and support in experimental design, and experimentation to other members of the group. Previous experience from work with mice models and next generation sequencing applications, is advantageous.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Huddinge

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
