Research group

The research group of Kenneth Chien is located at Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Solna. The group consists of a team of physicians and scientists focused on studying pathways of human cardiogenesis and its implications for regenerative medicine. The research goal is finding novel pathways and principles for regenerative medicine in general and repairing damaged cardiac muscle tissue in particular.

Duties

  • Maintenance of various cell lines in culture, including but not limited to human embryonic stem cells (hESCs)
  • Differentiation of cardiac progenitor cells from hESCs
  • Assist lab members with experiments related to cell culture work including but not limited to: generation of transgenic cell lines, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS). Depending on project work load, you may also be asked to assist with PCR, ELISA, Western blot, molecular cloning, tissue processing and staining.
  • Lab maintenance such as: cleaning of cell culture facilities including hoods, water baths, work surface, shelving, regular mycoplasma testing of cultured cell lines and routine sterilization of CO2 incubators.
  • Assist lab manager as needed with inventory, orders and distribution of general supplies
  • Depending on personal aptitude, the candidate may also be involved in small rodent surgical work.

Please note that this position involves cell culture work, which requires flexible working hours. You will be expected to perform cell maintenance work on one weekend day of your choice and will receive the corresponding amount of time off on a week day of your choice.

Entry requirements

Suitable background is a Bachelors or a Masters degree in a relevant area. You must have extensive experience in cell culture work, with excellent sterile handling techniques. Basic skills include cell passaging, freeze/thawing, general maintenance of cell lines, and flow cytometry. Other related skills such as cell transfection / electroporation / nucleofection and basic molecular biology skills will be highly valued.  It would also be highly desirable to have a FELASA certificate and experience working with rodents. Experience with successfully and independently running even a small project from beginning to end including basic interpretation of your data with reportable results would be greatly valued. Prior industry or biotechnology work experience and with GMP practices are highly desirable.

Experience in culturing of either mouse or human embryonic stem cells, or other stem cells such as mesenchymal stem cells, will be highly valued but not absolutely necessary. 

Furthermore, you have excellent communication skills in both Swedish and English in writing and speaking.

You need to be able to work both in a team as well as independently, and you must be very service minded. Your work is thorough and diligent, and you are good at documenting your work and working in a clean and precise way. Interpersonal skills will be highly valued.
