Do you want to contribute to improving human heath?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group
Our research group, under the leadership of senior professor Lars Rydén, at the Cardiology Unit, Department of Medicine, Solna (Norrbacka) has a long experience in performing epidemiological research and clinical trials in the field of “Diabetes Mellitus, Impaired Glucose Tolerance- prevalence, prognosis, and treatment”. The main aim is to study risk factors and markers for cardiovascular disease and their potential pathophysiological mechanisms in individuals with dysglycemia, point out and evaluate new treatment paradigms, spread obtained information and study how new information is implemented. Our main hypotheses are that the prognosis for patients with dysglycemia can be improved by 1) early detection and intervention 2) identification of new risk markers that may increase the understanding of the disease and its complications and may direct new treatment possibilities and 3) improved management. The present PhD project will be performed in collaboration with and with co-supervisors from the Swedish National Diabetes Registry and the Swedish Pacemaker registry

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
People with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), are at an increased risk of developing CVD, most frequently acknowledged in the form of coronary artery disease and heart failure. There are however also indications that the risk of developing heart rhythm disorders is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus. The main objective of this PhD-project is to study the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and the risk for developing arrhythmias, reasons behind this association and the need of implantable pacemakers and/or defibrillators. The PhD project consists of four registry based epidemiological reports and an explorative observational study with the plan to include 10 patients. With support from the supervisors, the PhD student will prepare the study protocols and the statistical analysis plans, write the applications for ethical approval interpretation, perform the statistical analyses, interpret the data and write a manuscript. The PhD student will recruit patients and perform the exploratory clamp-study.
