The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Center for Eating Disorders Innovation (CEDI) in the department of medical epidemiology and biostatistics, MEB, and has been established under the auspices of the Swedish Research Council. We are an interdisciplinary team and we employ a diverse set of methodologies including genetic epidemiology, molecular genetics, neuroimaging, biomarkers, microbiology, animal models to enhance knowledge about the causes, treatments, and prevention of eating disorders.

We are seeking an enthusiastic research assistant to conduct fMRI in our ongoing research studies and assist with other analysis-intensive projects.

Your mission

At CEDI, you will be part of the CREAT-project team (PI Professor Cynthia Bulik) and involved in the neuroimaging component of the project as well as responsible for handling of data from the project’s other components. The project aim to study multiple factors associated with anorexia nervosa (AN) in discordant monozygotic twins where one of the twins has AN. The MRI acquisition will be performed on a 3-Tesla whole body scanner (GE 750) with both an 8-channel, as well as a 32-channel head coil. Structural brain scans for morphometric analyses as well as functional scans such as resting state fMRI and task-based fMRI will be performed during the participants 2-day stay at Karolinska.

In addition, you will be involved in the IT and data analysis aspects of several additional studies related to the genetic and environmental contributions to eating disorders (e.g., genome-wide association studies, copy number variation, microbiome).

Your profile

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as psychology, nutrition science, computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, biology or similar subject.

This position involves both direct patients contact as well as data analytic tasks and is suitable for someone who likes job variations. The ideal candidate will have experience in human brain imaging (MRI), understanding of experimental psychology, and comfort with managing and integrating databases. Ideally, the applicant should have experience in conducting fMRI experiments (e.g., presentation, psychtoolbox or similar) and analysis, (e.g., FSL and SPM analyses of fMRI, cortical thickness, DTI analyses), or willingness to learn, and an appreciation of methodological issues in neuroimaging.

The candidate is expected to work within the general framework of the research program and actively contribute to teaching and improving MR methodology, with respect to data post processing/analysis.

Applicants will be considered who have knowledge of post processing and analysis of MRI data and/or analytic expertise in working with genomic data. Applicants with high computational aptitude with strong willingness to learn will also be considered.

The applicant should further be thorough, efficient, a good communicator, and enjoy working as part of a diverse, energetic, interdisciplinary team. They need to have a considerate manner with patients and colleagues, and be flexible in dealing with unpredictability and changes. Strong verbal and written English and Swedish skills are required.
