Our team

Professor Miia Kivipelto’s research group - the Nordic Brain Network (NBN) - is part of the division of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, NVS. The largest part of this multidisciplinary research team is located at KI (Solna-Stockholm), but team members are also present at the Karolinska University Hospital, in Finland and UK. Professor Kivipelto’s research group carries out research focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research team has carried out prevention trials (RCT) and is involved in several international collaborations and networks (https://ki.se/en/nvs/nordic-brain-network).

What we do

Professor Kivipelto is the PI of the landmark FINGER RCT, the first large-scale trial showing that a multi-domain lifestyle-based intervention can benefit cognition in seniors at increased risk of dementia. Prof. Kivipelto is the Founder and Leader of the World-Wide FINGERS Network (WW-FINGERS, www.alz.org/wwfingers/), the first global network of multidomain lifestyle intervention RCTs for dementia risk reduction and prevention. WW-FINGERS aims to adapt, test and optimize the FINGER model in different populations. Since its inception in 2017 the Network has been growing exponentially, with over 25 countries across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Data harmonization, management and sharing, and data analysis planning are crucial steps that need to be addressed within the WW-FINGERS.

Your mission

The candidate will lead the NBN Biostatistics team, with other biostatisticians reporting to him/her. Through the team, the candidate will have the main responsibility for the development of strategies for data management, harmonization and sharing within the WW-FINGERS. The candidate will also have a main role in the development of the analytical plans. The candidate will oversee implementation of all the above listed items, support the steering committee of the WW-FINGERS, and provide guidance to the different countries within the WW-FINGERS. This requires availability to travel internationally.

Your profile

The candidate must have a strong knowledge in biostatistics and experience in intervention studies based on lifestyle interventions for the prevention of chronic disorders. The candidate should also have solid leadership skills.
The candidate needs to have a PhD-degree in a relevant field (statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or similar), and at least 10 years of experience preferably at docent level.
The candidate is required to have documented experience on statistical analyses from intervention studies with long follow-up including register-based follow-up and documented experience in leadership in statistical analyses in clinical intervention studies.

It is expected that the candidate has a number of publications with leading role from clinical intervention trials in medical journals. The candidate is expected to be able to publish scientific results in leading medical journals (eg. New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet, British Medical Journal). The candidate is expected to independently present results from the studies in international scientific conferences. Excellent spoken and written English is required.

Given that the original FINGER project is still ongoing, and its findings will inform the WW-FINGERS network data analysis, knowledge of Finnish and Swedish is a merit, as it will facilitate collaboration within the FINGER network.
