The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.
A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
Research group
The doctoral student will be a member of the Chronic Inflammatory Disease Epidemiology group at the Clinical Epidemiology Division The group is approximately 25 people (doctoral students, postdocs, senior researchers, biostatisticians) conducting epidemiological research using Swedish registers and clinical data. The student will work with Associate Professor Marie Holmqvist and her team studying the consequences of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies and systemic sclerosis.
The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
Applicants are invited to apply for a doctoral research training position to work on the design and analysis of epidemiological studies, using Swedish cohort and register-based data. The applicant will use epidemiological and bio-statistical methods to investigate the relationship between systemic inflammatory diseases and clinical outcomes. During the doctoral education, the student will conduct data management, analysis, and prepare manuscripts and presentations to communicate results. The specific doctoral project requires active collaboration between clinicians, biostatisticians, and epidemiologists.
The student will also be asked to collaborate in projects where others students/authors are first authors, and is expected to actively participate in journal clubs, seminars, and research group meetings. Students are encouraged to initiate workshops and to take active part in the development of the division of clinical epidemiology.
