Karolinska Institutet, Institute of Environmental Medicine

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Division
The research at the Unit of Epidemiology is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis with an emphasis on environmental and lifestyle factors, and on methodological development and stringency. The research is based on large register based cohorts, as well as cohorts and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples. The division is divided into three research groups of which “The Ageing Population” led by Associate Professor Karin Modig is one. The research focus is the health of the ageing population: What is driving the increase in life expectancy, how the health among the old has developed in line with the longer lives, and what can be expected in the future. More information can be found here.

Duties
The postdoc is expected to conduct epidemiologic research within ageing epidemiology and in the intersection of epidemiology and demography. During the first two years of the postdoc period, the candidate will be performing research within two specific projects, the first concerning use of home care related to several health outcomes as well as the influence of family support. The second project concerns hip fractures among the old. There is, however, some room for the candidate to influence the project and to adjust according to his/her own profile. The postdoc is furthermore expected to take part in supervision of master- and PhD students, and in teaching epidemiological theory and methods both at the Master level and in the Doctoral program in Epidemiology. The postdoc position is a fixed-term position of 2 years, with a possibility of prolongation of another 2 years.
