Karolinska Institutet, The Institute of Environmental Medicine

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Unit of Biochemical Toxicology
The objective of our research is to understand the connection between exposure to chemicals/particles and diseases. We work with cellular models to identify and characterize molecular and biochemical processes that are induced by exposure to various toxic substances. We also focus on risk assessment and work related to adverse outcome pathways. We are now recruiting a Post Doc who will work with Associate Professor Hanna Karlsson in projects related to toxicity of (nano)particles and microplastics.

Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated Post Doc with interest and experience in experimental toxicology. The Post Doc will culture cells (lung cells, macrophages, intestine cells), exposed them to nanoparticles and microplastics and investigate toxicity with a focus on genotoxicity and inflammation. There will also be a focus on understanding inflammatory-driven genotoxicity investigated by using co-cultures. Exposures will take place using submerged cultures and air-liquid interface exposure. The transformation/dissolution of the nanoparticles/microplastics will be explored in collaboration with scientists from other universities.

Qualifications
The applicant is expected to be an enthusiastic candidate with a strong knowledge within cell biology and toxicology. Experience in cell culturing and toxicity assessment is required. Previous work with nanoparticles or microplastics and toxicity testing with a focus on genotoxicity and/or inflammation including techniques such as comet assay, ELISA/multiplexing, flow cytometry, microscopy and RT-PCR is preferable and experience in co-culture work and use of air-liquid interface exposures is meritorious. The candidate must be able to work within a team with scientists from different disciplines and fluency in English is a requirement.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
