Department
The Department is organized in 10 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Surgery, Neuropediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuropsychiatry (KIND), Reproductive and Perinatal Health. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and have several research groups, dealing with both basic and clinical science.

Division
A position as an Assistant professor is available at the Division of Neuropediatrics. The employment as Assistant Professor is 50% of full time and time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Research group
The position is available at the Division of Neuropediatrics, Department of Women’s and Children’s health, led by Dr. Eva Weidenhielm Broström. Our research in neuropediatrics aims to assess and treat neuromuscular dysfunction and identify underlying molecular mechanisms, especially in children with cerebral palsy. Our research is mainly clinical but spans from the whole-body level down to specific tissues and organs at the molecular level. Research is conducted in close collaboration with the Pediatric Department at the Karolinska University Hospital. Clinical assessment and metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analysis (gene and protein expression, arrays, and bioinformatics) in different tissues as well as in primary cell cultures.

The research project
The overall research goal of this position is to increase the understanding of how skeletal muscle in cerebral palsy differs from that of typically developed children and how exercise can influence the degenerative process. Moreover, the project aims at investigating the effects of increased/decreased use prepuberty on skeletal muscle health in early adulthood. The close link between basic and clinical research will facilitate a transfer of the basic findings into clinical practice

Duties
The position as Assistant Professor in Clinical Muscle Physiology is directed to research. The preferred candidate is an MD/PhD with experience working with pediatric patients. Knowledge of functional, molecular, and cellular aspects of muscle growth and atrophy in healthy subjects and patients with cerebral palsy is essential. Academic degree and/or published papers in physical activity interventions (i.e. resistance exercise and endurance exercise) is required as this in an ongoing focus in the research unit. Participation in national and international projects as principal and co-investigator in the field of skeletal muscle and/or exercise is valued. The successful candidate should have experience in assessment of skeletal muscle function, imaging techniques to measure muscle mass (ultrasound, MRI), and molecular methods including, but not limited to, ELISA, western blotting, gene array, qRT-PCR, and enzyme activity. Past participation in teaching of undergraduate/postgraduate courses, as well as experience in supervision of undergraduate, Master and PhD students is preferred. Publications in peer-reviewed journals in the area of skeletal muscle, preferably in the area of cerebral palsy, is expected from the candidate.

Eligibility requirements
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position of assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Other requirements
The candidate should have a track record of both grants and publications in human physiology, as well as the ability to interact with other national and international research groups. An excellent level of English, spoken and written, is a requirement as well as documented pedagogical merits.

  2. Grants obtained as principal applicant in national or international competition that covers the applicant’s own salary for at least two years from the final date of employment as an Assistant Professor. Project funding obtained in national or international competition (i.e. excellence grants obtained from the Swedish Research Council, European Research Council (ERC), Wallenberg Foundation (WAF) or Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) that covers costs for salaries, rent, materials and other project-related expenses for the research for at least two years from the final date of employment as an Assistant Professor.
  3. First and/or senior author of a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles published in leading international scientific journals over a number of years after dissertation, with the emphasis on the qualification period as an Assistant Professor.
  4. An independent research line deemed by independent experts and departmental management to offer excellent future potential for both the individual researcher and the department in question.
  5. A documented good ability to lead the own research group – including staff responsibility and supervision of doctoral and/or postdoctoral students.
