Karolinska Institutet, Department of Biosciences and Nutrition

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Research group
The candidate will work in the laboratory of Professor Rune Toftgård (group leader), Marco Gerling (PI) and Leander Blaas (PI). Our research is focused on signaling pathways, cellular heterogeneity  and interplay in tumors and the role of tissue stem cells and progenitor cells in cancer initiation, progression and metastasis.

Responsibilities
We use a variety of techniques including mouse models, organoid culture, ex vivo culture of patient material and imaging modalities along with biochemical and molecular biology methods. Responsibilities include general lab management and support functions and introduction of new members of the group as well as experimental laboratory work. Specifically, managing of the lab’s colony of genetically modified mice including breeding, maintenance of inventories of cell lines, antibodies and plasmids as well as assistance with cell culturing and standard molecular biology work will be important parts of the duties. You will also be actively involved in ongoing research projects by performing mRNA expression analysis, immunohistochemistry, in situ mRNA analysis and biochemical assays.

Qualifications
Applicants must have relevant and adequate university education, preferably a Ph.D., and a scientific background. We are looking for a self-driven and service-minded person with good organizational skills and a strong interest in research. Social competence, the ability to work in a team and good communication skills are important. Proficiency in English, written and spoken, is required and proficiency in the Swedish language is a merit. Knowledge of standard computer programs is expected.

Form and time of employment
The position is a temporary post for 12 months with the possibility of extension.
The position is immediately available.
