Karolinska Institutet

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division
The Department of Laboratory of Medicine, located in Huddinge Campus, is one of the Karolinska Institutet’s largest departments with 9 research divisions including the Clinical Research Centre (CRC), where the project will be carried out. 350 people are employed at the department, half of which are PhD-students. The Centre provides the facilities needed for cell- and molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo. EL Andaloussi’s research group works primarily on different drug delivery systems, in particular peptide-based delivery vectors and exosomes, as therapeutic delivery vehicles for oligonucleotide-based therapeutics and other biologics. The lab has different on-going projects related to the delivery and application of therapeutic oligonucleotides and a wide number of close collaborations related to the oligonucleotide-based therapeutics with labs both within and outside Karolinska Institutet. One arm of the research is focusing on development of therapeutic oligonucleotides and peptide-based drug delivery systems as treatment modalities for various inflammatory conditions.

Duties
The project will focus the development of oligonucleotide-based therapeutics in combination with novel drug delivery systems for therapeutic targeting of inflammation. The first part of the work concentrates on developing and optimizing peptide-based delivery systems for in vitro and in vivo delivery of oligonucleotide-based therapeutics. Second part will involve utilization of the optimized therapeutic oligonucleotide formulation in cell culture and animal models of inflammation.

Prospective candidates should be highly motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Entry requirements
The applicant should be a scientist with completed postdoctoral experiences (at least 5 years) and have a solid background in molecular biology or pharmaceutical biotechnology and immunology. Practical lab experience is essential, especially in the following areas: solid phase peptide synthesis, HPLC/LC, DLS and NTA analysis, fluorescent/ confocal microscopy (ICC and IHC), flow cytometry, fluorescence spectroscopy, protein analysis (Western blot, ELISA and IP), cell culture work (knock-in and –out, establishing cell lines and cell assays), RNA expression analysis (rtPCR, qPCR).

The applicant should have strong experience with the delivery of oligonucleotide therapeutics, in particular using cell-penetrating peptides. Previous work with animals would be highly merited. In addition, excellent proficiency in both spoken and written English is highly desired. We are looking for an energetic and passionate person who fits in, and actively contributes to our team.

Bases of assessment
We stress research expertise when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
