Karolinska Institutet, Institutet för miljömedicin

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

The Unit of Biochemical Toxicology
The objective of our research is to understand the connection between exposure to chemicals/particles and diseases with a focus on cancer. We work with cellular models to identify and characterize molecular and biochemical processes that are induced by exposure to various toxic substances. We also focus on risk assessment and work related to adverse outcome pathways.

Duties
The underlying concept in this project is to use a combination of different cells (lung cell lines, primary epithelial cells and co-cultures) and different exposure techniques (submerged cultures and air-liquid interface exposure) with the purpose of generating relevant data on toxicity of nanomaterials without using animals. We are now seeking a highly motivated Post Doc with interest and experience in experimental toxicology. The successful candidate will in particular focus on investigating inflammation and genotoxicity and using air-liquid interface cellular exposure to nanoparticle aerosols.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Qualifications
The applicant is expected to be an enthusiastic candidate with a strong knowledge within cell biology and toxicology. Experience in cell culturing and toxicity assessment is required. Previous work with nanoparticles and (geno)toxicity including techniques such as comet assay, flow cytometry, microscopy and RT-PCR is preferable and experience in co-culture work and use of air-liquid interface exposures is meritorious. The candidate must be able to work within a team with scientists from different disciplines and fluency in English is a requirement.

Type of scholarship
The scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research is granted for eight months and is expecting to start January, 2019.

The amount is tax free and is paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
